Renovate existing drop-in/outreach centre for at risk/homeless youth and provide sanctuary for the youth, discreet, effective security for staff and a sense of welcoming community for all. We took a responsible approach to avoid the lockdown institutional tone usually associated with this type of facility. There was a need to instill a sense of belonging, respect and shelter while creating opportunities for outreach workers to interact and counsel the youth. Responsibility and sustainability played a major role in the design: sun tunnels and skylights for brightness; reclaimed wood flooring on walls rebuilt furniture sourced through thrift stores and back alleys. Since opening youth participation has surged and violence in the centre has diminished.
